Some conversations feel too hard to start. Suicide is often one of them. We worry we'll say the wrong thing, make it worse, or simply not know what to do — so we say nothing at all.
In our webinar for Suicide Prevention Month, we walked through where a lot of us get stuck, how we can show up for those we care about, and ways to promote help. The session also covered warning signs that are helpful to be aware of, the difference between risk factors and protective factors, and something that surprises a lot of people: how much ordinary connection matters. You don't need a clinical background to be a steady, caring presence in someone's life. In fact, that presence is one of the most protective things there is.
Maybe the most important takeaway is the simplest one: help exists, and it's always available. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is free, confidential, and open 24/7 — you can call or text 988, or chat at 988lifeline.org — whether you're struggling yourself or worried about someone else. You can also reach the Crisis Text Line by texting HOME to 741741.
