As part of Tava Health’s Mental Health Awareness Month initiative, we recently hosted an insightful and empowering webinar led by our Director of Clinical Operations, Alisa Trout. The session, titled "Mental Health in America: Top 5 Free Things to Help Your Well-Being," focused on practical, accessible strategies for enhancing mental wellness.

If you missed the live session or prefer to read at your own pace, we’ve got you covered. In this blog post, we summarize the key takeaways from the webinar. You can also download the presentation slide deck (PDF) or watch the full webinar via the embedded video below.

The State of Mental Health in America

Mental health is essential to how we think, feel, and act in our daily lives. Unfortunately, millions of Americans are affected by mental illness each year. Alisa kicked off the webinar by sharing critical data on the prevalence of mental health issues in the U.S., including:

  • 21% of all U.S. adults experience mental illness annually.
  • Disparities exist across demographics, with 44% of LGBTQIA+ adults reporting a mental illness.
  • The most common conditions include anxiety disorders (19%), depression (8%), and PTSD (4%).

How Mental Health Impacts Daily Life

Alisa explained that mental health challenges don’t just affect emotions—they impact nearly every aspect of our lives, including:

  • Work/Academic performance: task management, focus, confidence
  • Daily functioning: sleep, hygiene, eating habits
  • Social connections: interest in hobbies, relationships, mood, and irritability

The Top 5 Free Ways to Support Your Mental Well-Being

1. Mindfulness

Paying attention to the present moment with openness and curiosity helps reduce stress and improve emotional regulation. Try the 4-6 breathing technique—inhale for 4 counts, exhale for 6—to ground yourself.

2. Movement & Nature Therapy

Gentle physical activity, especially when done outdoors, can elevate your mood, reduce stress, and sharpen focus. Think: short walks, stretching, or yoga in a park.

3. Connection

Quality relationships help us feel seen and supported. Even brief moments of connection—a conversation with a friend or a shared laugh—can build emotional resilience.

4. Sleep Hygiene

Poor sleep is closely linked to increased anxiety. Create a healthy nighttime routine:

  • Limit screen time before bed
  • Keep a consistent sleep schedule
  • Build a sleep-friendly environment

5. Self-Reflection and Journaling

Writing down your thoughts helps clarify emotions, identify patterns, and reduce stress. Not sure where to start? Tava offers a 5-Week Mental Health Journal (PDF) filled with daily prompts to guide your self-exploration.

A Friendly Reminder from Tava Health

Mental wellness doesn’t require expensive tools or complicated routines. With small, free actions—like mindful breathing, journaling, or spending time with a friend—you can start improving your mental well-being today.
